Everyone has to start somewhere. Go and apply in places that you would like to work. I had no experience besides liking plants and knowing a lot of basics about plants when I got hired in the late 80's. I work in a nursery. You spend a lot of time outside and lots of cleaning and raking and moving. You learn as you go. I kept a little pad in my pocket and wrote down things I wanted to look up when I got home. Loading peoples plants and unloading truckloads of plants and putting them away and getting information out there for poeple who read. I know sometimes the vets hire poeple with no training if they seem to have a good aptitude for caring for animals. If you have retail experience, what about a nice pet store? Good luck at finding something you like doing.
I almost forgot the other part of your question. If you have a deck you can grow things in pots. Or get a few houseplants and play with those.

I have worked part time in the produce department of a grocery store doing the floral stuff. I did not have any experience, but i learned a lot. Mainly, I was a grocery bagger but when I had time, I helped with floral.
When I lived in Germany, I worked at a real florist. I made bouquets, corsages and boutonnières. To get that job, I had to demonstrate my arrangement abilities, since i had very little experience. Typically in Germany, you have to go to school just to work in a florist shop.
If that is what you want to do for a job, you may want to look into an apprenticeship.
As for living in an apartment and wanting to garden, you can garden indoors in pots. You can grow plants, flowers, and herbs. You can even grow dwarf citrus trees in pots indoors.

Skip the florist. Go to a Landscape shop or Plant Nursery. There are books on apartment gardens. Also, you may have to look hard for this one, but there are people that have land that they rent out by the season to apt. dwellers and seniors that like to garden but don't have land. Don't know what they're called or how you find them, but I know they exist.

If you live in a cool neighborhood there might be community gardens...where you rent or even are given a small plot of property that is part of a bigger garden for you to do all your planting...
If there isn't one in your neighborhood...get out and meet some old folks and start one up!

If a floral shop or garden center is hiring then there is usually someone there to train you , if you are enthusiastic, they will take you in a flash as these are hard jobs to fill and have high turnover! Good luck and enjoy!

in case you have on no account grown backyard plant life till now, your first attempt should not be indoors. you would be solid annoyed. And it extremely is going to cost greater to strengthen those greens or herbs than it may value to purchase them on the save. you will could desire to purchase sturdy-high quality potting soil, planters, and a few strengthen lights. you won't be able to attempt to be low-value and injury out with utilising trouble-free incandescent easy bulbs - it won't artwork. i could propose turning out to be an outdoors backyard next summer season and then from that have you ever could study adequate so which you would be able to herald some herbs for the wintry climate.

Start off at a local florist.
Buy and plant some indoor plants, seeds...You know.
Then use the money you earn and move to your own little place.
