The symbol you describe is technically the sign language symbol for "I love you." The "horn symbol" is supposed to be just pinky and index finger. if you extend your thumb, you're doing it wrong. Symbols don't have inherent meaning. They mean what we decide they mean. In the 80s it was popular in the heavy metal scene to represent Satan. Flashing it was a sign of rebellion. Since then it has gone more mainstream, and kids will commonly flash the sign at concerts indicating general approval, without any Satanic overtones. I saw a whole audience do it at an Evanescence concert 8 years ago, and they are nowhere close to a Satanic band.
