Something sounds suspicious about the company that is offering the check. I am suppose to deposit the check into my bank to cover processing fees for my winnings. I called the local police department and checked with the Better Business Bureau. Very little is known about the company or its practice. The police said I should ignore it. What should I do and how do I verify the ligitamacy of the check and company it is coming from? If anything, is the check at least good for cashing if I decide not to pay for the processing fees? Please help.

First, how do you win a contest you never played.
Second, didn't the police tell you to ignore it?

If you don't see the logic behind any of the above, cash the check and send them their processing fees! Then when the bank comes after you for cashing a bad check from a little known company, make sure you tell us about it.

It is a scam. They either have or will ask for your bank account number and some other personal information. Another scam is to get you to send them a legitimate check, and by the time their check gets back to you, yours will have been cashed. A reasonable idea, would be to explain it to the bank manager, and ask his advice. He may know of some way to verify if the check is good.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

This feels like a scam.

Ask you BANK: Do they print your bank account number on the check when it is cashed and returned to the writer of the check.

Most banks do.

There is your scam.

Contact and consult with the US Postal Service. They may prosecute it,

Or they might send you to the FBI or your local state prosecutors.

Keep the envelopes as evidence.

This is a scam that has been going on for some time. Send the check and any thing else they sent you to the post master general at your local post office. Don't fall for this scam. You will only come out a loser.

When you did not purchase a lottery ticket, how did you expect that you had won a lottery. It is scam. Already wide publicity is given in the news papers about it. Go and report the matter to the Police. Already a gang was arrested in Hydrabad.

Sounds fishy to me. I would google the company and go from there. But the police are probably correct in telling you to ignore it. IF you didnt actually enter a contest or something, I would be very wary!

If you didn't enter, you can't win.
If there were processing fees, they would simply be deducted from your winnings.
The check is bogus, if you deposit it, your bank will charge you back when it bounces.
I work at a bank and get regular updates about 'new' scams. This one has so many variations they quit updating us.

Call your State's Attorney General Office or Consumer Protection. Don't do anything with this and for sure don't give them any of your banking or credit card info. There is no free lunch. Ignore it, is my thought.
