I would research some of the biggest killers of the day today. Heart disease and Diabetes. The truth is studies have suggested that these can be due to inflammatory responses in our bodies, and inflammation is not necessarily a bad thing. What I guess I'd do is look at how we can fine tune our bodies' inflammatory systems to not attack ourselves, (eg Arthritis, lupus) but to only attack those things that we really would want attacked, eg, cuts, bruises... I would also try to see if there was a way of making our blood vessels more reisitant to damage, yet penetrable for our nutrients and oxygen.

I would study genetic engineering because its a facinating subject, in the not too distant future scientists are going to be able to create a human any way they want, for example, if you are wanting to have a baby, you can go get a sperm sample and an egg and customize your baby:
like, to have a child that is male, brown eyes, brow hair, 5'7 at full growth, and be interested in art.
Although I don't agree with this in the future, because it plays God, it still is a very interesting topic.

Assuming that I could pick what I wanted to research without concern of where my funding would come from, I would either study the genetic link between Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimers or the genetic components of autism.

Stem cells. My 22-yr-old son was in an accident two years ago and his neck was broken. Now he's quadriplegic from the injury. I believe that stem cell research will lead to help for this type of injury.

If I had a solid background in cell biology, I would research cancer mechanisms and risk factors. If I had a good foundation in embryology and development, I would research birth defects, and how to prevent them.

Something involving epigenetic inheritance. It amazes me that there are pathways other DNA to pass along inheritance.
