Diesel engines are cold natured by design, they take a LOT of battery power to start when cold. You may have hard starting issues below 20*F. The block heater is designed to be plugged in when temps are below freezing. This keeps the block warm and helps the engine start easier, with less chance of killing battery due to excess cranking.

I thought the duramax's had auto warming glow plugs so that you didn't have to plug them in? That's coming from an inlaw that was bragging about so I don't know exactly for sure. I would plug it in on very very cold nights though. Other than that you should be good to go.

i would only on the nights that the temp gets around 40 F. this way in the morning it will save your glow plugs a little and the engine will be a little bit warmer and you wont have to let it warm up as long.

check your owners manual for temperature recommendations for using the block warmer. powerstrokes have no problems with 32 degree starts, but if you are in the canadian arctic you may want to use it every night.
