Hi:

I got a best answer for putting in some possible hobbies for a 14 year old girl, and I think they were open enough for anyone. I don't know if it is proper for me to cut and paste that answer here, but you can look at it if you click on my name and then look at my best answers - it's one of the later ones so you should be able to see it pretty easily.

Most of the activities I tend to do are creative in nature, but you could maybe also try something like golf. I have several friends who really like to play, and I think they really get into it. It's nice, because it can be very good exercise if you walk at least a little bit of the course. Some other friends really like fishing and fly fishing, too.

I tell you, one of the most fun things I did recently was attend a raku firing when I took a little ceramics class at a local studio. It was so interesting, because in the backyard was a small concrete slab, and the ceramic pieces were placed on it, and a flame proof cylindrical blanket was placed over the pieces, and a hole was in the side of the blanket that like a propane torch fired into. The pieces were heated until the glowed, and then the blanket was lifted and each ceramic piece was taken out with tongs and lowered into a large garbage can that was lined with combustible materials, like newspaper, leaves, some people even had items like deceased pet hair. The material immediately burst into flames when the ceramic piece was lowered into it, and then the top of the garbage can was put on top, and a wet blanket was thrown over the whole can to seal in the smoke. The smoke added carbon markings to the ceramic pieces. It was a very fun and creative experience.

For good hobbies that really take my mind away, one thing is throwing ceramics. I get so absorbed in what I'm doing at the moment, it lets me really de-stress because I don't think about work or anything else when I do that activity.

I hope this might give you some ideas, and I truly hope you find something fun and rewarding. :)

At 40 years old, you have many years ahead of you. If I were free and that young, I would look into some college courses and try to find something that I was interested in studying and start a new career that would be rewarding and interesting. You will find people your own age in college because many people are finding new paths to follow in the same way. Be brave and you will find your age to be a very rewarding time. Good luck.

It depends what you want to achieve and what your limitations are. If you are looking for something you can do at home with a relatively small amount of space then I can recommend you get a dremel mulitool which are useful for a load of different things but great fun for glass engraving which you can practice on any old bottle or jar you have around. If you want to get out of the house take up dance, salsa or ceroc or something similar. It's a fab way to keep fit and to meet people and it's loads of fun.

Try collecting one coin from each country. Should keep you busy and you can start by getting a coin magazine like Numismatic News (at coin dealers) and buying a pound and going through them. Try putting together a Lincoln memorial 1959-2007set of cents together from change. Go to the bank get some rolls of cents and start. Go to a coin dealer for an album to put them in.

Here is a great hobby --- learn how to fly an airplane.

It is a great hobby and not as hard as you would think. You can become a recreational or sport pilot for a lot cheaper than a private pilot.

First look for your inclinations, what you like to do the most. But here are some suggestions: read a good book, painting, classes on arts and crafts, exercises, volunteer work, play an instrument, photography, home videos, cooking. At least I love to do all that.

try collage or assemblage - don't know if you're male or female and this craft appeals to both.

here's some other ideas

learn to draw
punched tin
woodcarving
woodburning
scratch art
working with sculpey clay
photography
papermaking
beading ...

you might want to take a walk around a large craft store and look at all the options there, see if anything strikes your fancy

Escape into a good book. There's also photography. Or you could take a class at your local community college, I'm taking a writing course right now. It's fun :)
