to buy one? a pet rat ranges from about 5-10 dollars.(atleast, around here, I live in wisconsin..it may vary in other places but I cant imagine the price difference would be *too* different) Feeder rats are usually cheaper. the rat I just bought was suppose to be a feeder and he's actually very sweet. But sometimes they've had No interaction at all and if youre planning on taking on a feeder rat you better have a lot of patience and time. Pet stores dont spend alot of time with feeders because theyre not suppose to be pets, theyre suppose to be food. But I like to save them from that fate when I can. To own however is a different story. you'll need a cage with lots of climbing space, and a big wheel, and preferably other fun toys for him/her to play with. thats the most expensive part however. After you've bought the essentials, pet rats are actually pretty cheap to own (besides vet bills that come around once in a while)..and theyre very rewarding pets to have.
For food I usually mix one bag of rat food with one bag of grainy cereal (nothing overly sugary..stuff like wheat puffs, rice crispies, cheerios, etc). It makes the food last twice as long, and the rats love the treat.
For toys you can be very creative. A trip to the dollar store does wonders. I give my rats crinkle paper for gift baskets. They love making a bed out of it. I also cut up white towels and put a few pieces of that in their cage at a time. they chew on it and make a bed out of it. I bought them a wicker basket to chew on and sleep in as well. The possibilities are endless. Hammocks for ferrets are good too but theyre a little more expensive and you'll have to replace it probably every month or so (rats like chewing, too)

I would say about $6 for a fancy rat. They can be a little more or a little less expensive usually based on the size. Before you get a rat do your research! They can be great pets, but they do need to be cared for properly.
Get a wire cage with a plastic bottom. (Aquariums do not give enough air circulation.) And I recommend that if you are going to get 1 rat you should get another one. It's not that much more work or money to care for two and your rats will be happier.

A pet rat isn't very expensive. We bought one that was meant to be a feeder for $2, and a "fancy" rat for about $6

I have paid anywhere from $2.99 to $12.99 for a pet store rat. I think the lowest-priced rats were "feeders" and/or pets, but they're all pets to me. Some pet stores will sell their rats for the higher price to try and discourage reptile owners from buying the rats for food. Herpers want the cheapest price for their reptiles' food
I paid $25.00 for a pedigree rat. Jordi was one of two Blue Merles, the first of their kind in the province where I live.
I've paid nothing, $5.00, $8.00, $10.00, and $12.00 for rats from breeders.

If you are getting a rat, hopefully two rats, for the first time, you might want to talk to other experienced rat-keepers by joining some of the many rat-only Yahoo Groups.
