according to his bio his older brother died by an accident while cutting some lumber. check out the movie "walk the line" it tells all.

He didn't really die. They're making a "Walk the Line 2" in which it's discovered he was kidnapped and brainwashed. He grew up with gypsies in Greenwich Village and currently owns and operates a tatto parlor....I won't spoil the sequel by giving anything else away...
