My gerbil recently has been sratching his back off, and scratching his eye out. What is this? Tumor. Stupidity? I want him to stop or put out of his misery.

to me that sounds like mites. give him a bath in witch hazel and mouth wash a few times.(i did this with my gerbils when they got them and it worked fine) and also spray flea killer around the room he is in. make sure to move him out of the room first and let the spray settle before bringing him back in. I know you have no $$$ to take him to the vet but you're going to have to do something! If you don't,then its time to let him go...

He might have fleas/ticks on his back. As for scratching his eyes, it might be an allergy. Try changing the bedding to Aspen or Corncob. Never use cedar or pine, as they are known to be irratating.
