Driving to NYC is a huge hassle, I've done it. There's plenty to do in Philly.

You can do the history route - Independence Mall, Liberty Bell, Christ Church to visit Ben Franklin's grave (and other famous people), Betsy Ross house, Edgar Allen Poe house.
You can do the museum thing. On the Parkway you have the Art Museum - go there and run up the "Rocky steps". It's an excellent museum. Also on the Parkway is the Rodin museum (best collection outside of Paris), the Franklin Institute, Academy of Natural Sciences.
You can do the fun route. Go to South Street and have some drinks at Fat Tuesdays and people watch. Go in all the wacky stores like Zipperhead. Have a cheeseteak or a bite at one of the many restaurants on South Street or just off it.

There are other things like the Reading Terminal Market - kind of like a huge farmer's market.

You can do a carriage ride and get some history of the city.

Or you can mix and match any of the above.

If going to NYC...take the train and save the hassle of driving. As far as Philly, lots to see and do. Many museums, art galleries, restaurants, etc. Philly is a very walkable city, which is a plus.

You have to get a cheese steak in south Philly from Pat's or Geno's.
