That could be a brief jokeline for a standup comic, but no there isn't a deeper relationship.

The enlgish word "god" originates with the Germanic "gott". The old english "docga" is the anscestor of the modern "dog". If any special relation was intended you would see it in Latin and other languages less mutt-like than English such as German; Gott and Hund respectively.

It's a humerous discussion topic which quite a relief from most of these questions, thank you for asking it.

Actually, that would fit in perfectly with most pluralistic religions, you have some nice Gods that really love you, and some that wannt to rip your head off.

However, I think it's just one of those things that pops up in a launguage.

Good spelled backwards is Doog, and that is like a dog and a third, or just feces...
