I hope it's a fluke!

Although it raises interesting questions and posits amusing puzzles about Christian mysticism, european history, secret societies and such, it seems to me that "The Da vinci Code" could be the worse fiction novel to make the bestseller list ever. I found the "Thriller" part lacking in the extreme.

So how did it get to be a phenomenal international bestseller? Hype? A hunger for some Judeo-Christian culture (the religious powers-that-be sure managed to squeeze some air time and mindshare out of it)? Bloody good writing? What?

It's so predictable, so facile, that it could turn "Deus ex machina" into a four-letter word. It certainly turned MY stomach. I even read "Angels and Demons", just to check if I wasn't in a bad mood or otherwise prejudiced when I read "The Da vinci Code" (and I'm still kicking myself for buying it).

I got about halfway through before "Angels and Demons hit the garbage bin.

I'm not in the practice of knocking a fellow author, but... YECCH !

I gather Brown's wife did the research...

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. The book was on the bestseller list for a reason, its just not your cup of tea. Just think about this: right now Mr. Brown is probably sitting on the french riviera, sipping some wonderful wine that i have never heard of, readin research for his next novel, which will probably sell through 4 printings in as many years, and all because the readership that he maintains is not as persnickety as yourself. You have to respect the man for knowing what his audience likes to buy and delve into to escape their normal lives.

You and I had similar experience with TDC. Got sucked in by all the hype, and then was sorely disappointed. I've written this before, but it's worth repeating - this was one of the worst pieces of fiction ever foisted on an unsuspecting public. I think Brown panders to his readers by making them feel so much smarter than the smart characters in the book. The reader is figuring out the clues 5-10 pages before the characters do. And the happy, sappy ending really turned my stomach. I'm only glad that I didn't buy the book, my niece lent it to me, and that's the only reason I did not throw it away when I was done with it. And as much as I like Audrey Tatou, who was probably perfect for the role , I could not waste my time and money seeing the movie.

Man, I completely agree. I tried to read it but it was so formulaic and tedious I just had to stop.
I suppose if someone was unaware of the idea that Jesus HAD to have been married it might prove a tittilating read. None of the ideas are new - a Jew of his age and lineage, it would be unthinkable. Again he is called Rabbi and Rabbis have to be married so their physical needs are taken care of.
I frequently read books that are so poorly written and become big sellers... go figure! Oh yes, "The Celestine Prophecy" was another irritating one - formula #5 KERCHING!

That was nothing but a trick only to make way for the anti-christ so that it will be more believable the lies that he will come and tell, the Bible says he will come and many will be deceived, so be careful with that
