I live in california and had a dog which passed away of natural causes, age. I have a friend who owns a ferret and they seem very social and loveable animals. However, in California they are illegal so one has to travel to Arizona to get one. Does any now a pet store in Arizona where i can call to get one?

if its illegal to buy one it california but its not illegal to own one then i would say good luck, if its illegal to own one then dont own one. They are affectionate and playful pets, but why give one a home that you may not be able to keep it in. If it gets sick or hurt and you take it to a vet they may get you in trouble for owning one. I would think hard about taking your friends animal since you may not be able to provide a forever home.

Most pet stores sale ferrets, but beware of getting an adult as they are a lot harder to litter box train, and may be a bit nippy. If possable ask to hold one that you like just to make sure its not nippy. I recommend purchasing a marshal ferret as they seem to be much more friendly, but they cost a little bit more. If you feed it marshal ferret food they even will guarntee the ferret for a year. And they are descented so they have very little oder. Ferrets can be tons of fun but they are a big responsablity too. You must clean out there cage frequently as they poop about once every 3 hours. I have 2 female marshel ferrets and they are awsome. here are a few places i found for you:

Before you get a ferret, make sure you have a good vet lined up for it. I don't live there, but I heard that some vets don't take ferrets in California. Also, I would get a ferret from a breeder instead of a pet store. Most pet store ferrets end up dying of cancer or adrenal problems because of poor breeding.
Here is a link to a ferret breeder that I am thinking about getting my next ferrets from:

They are about the same price as pet store ferrets, but you get to choose a color and they will [most likely] have fewer health problems!
Good luck with your ferret, you will love them.

Is it illegal to BUY one or OWN one? If it's illegal to own, don't put yourself in a bad position. Don't buy pets from pet shops, how they are raised would disgust you and he might end up being ill. Look on petfinder.com for ferrets. You could get a single one or a pair (they are happier in pairs because they are very social) for cheaper than at a pet store or breeder and they are up to date on shots and usually already fixed. Make sure you do your research do that you know what to expect. Lots of people get one because they think they are cute and have met one that was sweet, but if you don't know what to expect, the ferret could drive you crazy. Good Luck!!

note the word "social" - everyone i know with them says you must have a pair. they are also HIGH maitenance, and smell funky without frequent fur and habitat cleaning. they are not a beginner pet, even if you had a dog, they are so much different. you should do a LOT of online research before getting ferrets, and actually reconsider anyhow b/c like you said, it's illegal where you live. go be an active political constituent to have that law changed before you get one! sorry for the rant, but i felt the need.

petsmarts and petcos and petsupermarkets and petlands all have ferrets. just call ahead to make sure they have them in stock -- they all have homepages with store locations and numbers. they do make great pets but you have to ferret-proof your house. make sure the kitchen cabinets have child locks and stay shut -- a ferret can squeeze through a crack of an inch or more. you also have to talk your mom and dad into getting rid of recliners and sofa sleepers if your ferret is going to have the run of the house -- they can get up in the furnitures mechanisms and get killed. too many ferrets die in furniture.

I would actually look in the paper. They would be a lot cheaper. Make sure you want one. They are very curious animals and will get into a lot. I would consider reading up on them and making absolutly sure you want one. Then I would look around. I know most pet stores have them. Petco I know for sure should have them. And they have information sheets at Petco.com, plus books.

Any pet store in Arizona or Oregon should have them...and there are classifieds online.

My friend gets hers up in Oregon. We just drive a few hours and then she's got her ferret.:)

They are wonderful pets!

I had four of them.....they stink and some are quite rude, they steal your stuff and hide it...and they are worse than babies about safety proofing. Any small gap and they are gone or into something that is very dangerous. They poop in every corner too. EVERY CORNER!
