At the end, Jonas takes Gabriel and runs away from the community because he knows what it means to be Released(killed because you aren't the same, remember, this village was big on sameness) and they wanted to Release Gabriel. Also, I think other reasons he ran was because of this idea of sameness no longer was appealing to him(it never really was) and was too one sided, no depth. The farther they ran from the community the harder and harsher the terrain and weather got until mostly starved and exhausted, Jonas reaches the top of a hill where a sled lays waiting for him to climb onto with Gabriel. At the bottom of the hill is a house where Jonas can hear music, I believe caroling, and he slides down and the book ends.

Did Jonas and Gabriel live or not is a question that alot of people ask and I can't say I have an answer to it. I believe they did, but that's the optimist in me. Mostly because they shouldn't have lived for all that they had gone through. If they were back in their community and had shown up in the state they were, surely they would have been Released, and it's that reason I think they lived. Because the community wouldn't have let them.

Reread the book or at least the end if you can. The end is so open ended with no definitive conclusion that all you have is speculation, even the author admits to writing it that way.

Jonah takes the baby to save him from being killed by the people of his society. When they run away they come to a new village that isn't quite so bad as the one Jonah grew up in. This is a great dystopic story. If you really liked it I would recommend Anthem by Ayn Rand and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Both are great books like The Giver.

He goes out into the real world and he finds a house or something, but the book ends there and he never gets there. I read it in 7th grade, so I might be off.

Jona escapes from his village with the newborn before they can "give him up" and he goes on a sled ride to find freedom, so in the end he comes onto a new village or small town and taht is where he is going to lvie now.

Hmm, I read it a LONG time ago...I think the main character takes the baby...I can't remember either of their names...and they leave where they live to go live somewhere else in the world that's a normal community; not like they were living in.
