What is the origin of the short musical pieces played (like The Addams Family theme) during basketball games?

Why do they play these tunes all the time and is there a name for this style of music?

They're just to get the crowd hyped in certain situations. Like when there's a jump ball, in some arenas they'll play "Jump" by Kris Kross. Or if an away team player fouls out they'll play "Hit The Road Jack"

I often wonder why they play any songs during basketball games. Too many people in the audience that can't simply be entertained by the game.
