Most local newspapers including the Toronto Sun have a poetry corner. It's a good start. As well local libraries often have free readings and writers workshops where you can ask a published author about your poem.

I, too, was a novice at even writting poetry, let alone getting one published. I wrote a sweet love poem for my boyfriend for valentines and got bitten by the poetry bug.

I like this website: poetry.com

I've now gotten three poems published and love the creative part of writing. Good luck!

Go to your local bookstore and pick up this year's Poet's Market. It's a great resource for those who are starting to get serious about publishing. Or you can purchase them online--abebooks.com, powells.com, etc. Beware web contests and vanity presses (mags or books that promise to publish you if you buy their book). Be sure to research your markets too. Don't waste your time on places that don't publish your type of work.
