all good, logical answers. but the reason is there used to be but they were removed - just like in london - because they are a place for terrorists to put bombs.

I would assume there is no trash can on the Golden Gate bridge due to the fact that you're not supposed to stop moving on the bridge. You drive across to the other side then look for a trash can.

Ah, good riddance. The Department of Homeland Security finally does something worthwhile. Why would you want to "trash" (pun intended) a national treasure, any way?

Trash cans are unattractive. They're also notoriously susceptible to misuse (people trying to stuff cans that are already full, homeless people digging in the cans, unruly teenagers tossing the cans around for fun, spitters who can't aim, and even the occassional urinators).

It would only serve to 'waste' space, because you are not really going to cross the bridge on foot are you? If you are, there are no stores to buy and unwrap things anyway. We would not want to promote the stopping of cars to unload their garbage.
