its 50 dollars= 12 months but when you buy the 360 it comes with a free month which is cool because you can find out if you like it before you pay 50 bucks to get a year
you will need either a ethenet cable which is easier than wireless because you plug it into the back of your 360 to your router like a computer our you can buy a wireless adapter to plug in the back of your sytem to receive the wireless signal if you have a wireless router when you get your 360 set up this should help you get your account ready http://tech.yahoo.com/gd/setting-up-your-xbox-before-playing/153067

A 12 month subscription to Xbox Live Gold (equivalent to original xbox live) is $50 and gives you the ability to play Xbox live capable games. Xbox Live Silver comes free with each system and allows you to download arcade games, but you can't play normal games online. The 3 month subscription is $20. And the 1 month is $8. Also, if you have xbox live for the original xbox, you can transfer that account over to your 360. All you need is all the information, such as PPoE settings and credit card information. To play xbox live, you will need an ethernet cord (comes with the 360 pro package or your modem), and you need a high speed internet connection (DSL, Cable, T1, T3, etc.). The ethernet cord is plugged in just above the USB port in back of the 360, and plugged into the back of your router or modem. Hope that helps!

12 months = 50$ cheap. A fast internet connection needed as well as an ethernet cable connected to the back or wireless router.
