Typically, what happens when you just have two oscars is that one of them becomes the dominant fish and bullies the other.
That means that the bullied fish only gets to eat what the other misses and is picked on constantly. If it survives, it is usually stunted and never reaches its' full growth potential.
The best thing to do is buy 6-8 and raise them together. I would start them in a 30 gallon tank. They will sort themselves out and you will usually get a pair (male/female) that will bond and eventually spawn.
As they grow, you will need larger and larger tanks. When they reach about 8-10 inches, they should have been in a 55 gallon tank for about 3-4 months. At this point, you should be able to see the two that are bonding. Move the pair to their own 75 gallon and wait for them to grow to full size (about 15").
Now you should sell, give away or give back to the store the rest of the fish, or leave them alone in the 55 to see if there is another pair in the mix.
Oscars are big messy fish, so you will need big tanks and you will have to clean them frequently.... partial water changes and siphoning gravel weekly. They are great fish, I had five of them in a 125 g for a few years. Good luck!

Callum, you would be wise to listen to the "thumbs up" advice given here. It would appear that some of the people in the fish hobby forgot that these are "domesticated" WILD animals. If you are going to put these fish into a 38 gallon tank, you could instead mail me your money. I would put it to good use. If I may make a suggestion, your on answers so I will anyway, seriously research what the Oscars natural environment is. Replicate it as closely as possible, and buy ONE. Just remember they are dirty fish and will need frequent tank cleanings and adequate filtration. If you want more action in your tank (artificial habitat), get a similarly aggressive (yes oscars are aggressive) , much smaller fish. Might I recommend most any African cichlid. My personal favorites are Bumblebees and Blue peacocks. Frontosas are cool too. Can you fit two in a 90 gallon, sure. But if you want happy fish, you can only have one. By the way, a fish will NOT only grow to the size of it's environment. You should have seen the Cobra snakehead that was my first fish. Within a year the cute little three inch fish was a 28" monster that ate everything in sight.

I had two Oscars in one tank. What ended up happening was the one fish kept on getting bigger and bigger yet,the other one didn't grow. So I guess the big one got hungry and he ate the smaller fish. My advice, get two separate tanks.

you can have as many oscars as you want in a tank but if you want two you need a 100galon tank or larger. usualy i would say an inch of fish for evory gallon of aquarium water but with fish as big as oscars you need a tank big enough so the fish doesn't half to bend it's body to tern around. so basicly it needs to be twice as long as the oscars body ( wich is 14 to 16inches long). also it needs to be twice as deep or more than it is tall and five times as long as the oscars body.

:You most definately can have any number of Oscar's in a tank as long as it is big enough. It is other less aggressive fish that you have to be leary of adding with them. You can have a plecostomas or two also with them ( alligator algae eaters).

You can keep as few as one oscara in a tank, they are the type of fish that can be happy by themselves-they are very territoral,I own two fire mouths the most agressive, and belive it or not I also have 15 goldfish in there with them.As long as your fish are the same size they should get along just fine.

MYTH = You cannot keep two Oscars together in one aquarium.
Yes, it's a myth.

That URL is a photograph of my two Oscars together. They were 11 inches long and 13 inches long. Male and female. They lived and bred together just fine.
Remember, no other types of fish will survive with them, however. They must be alone.
Good luck!

It can be done if the tank is at least 150 gallons and there are alot of hiding places.
