Get a Dual Core processor (AMD x2 or Intel Core Duo), a big HDD, maybe 80-120GB because computer graphics takes a lot of space. At least 1GB Ram and a fairly decent graphics driver.

You do not have to wait until Vista comes out. I bought my laptop last November and it came with a free Vista upgrade. I just applied for the Vista software and they will be sending it via mail when it comes out end January.

But if you are serious graphic artist, a Mac is the best for it. (so far that's what I heard from my graphic artist friends)

I would go look at the minimum requirements for photoshop and go from there. Graphics usually mean lots of ram. So at a minimum you need 500MB. Ofcourse the more the better. In computer ususally the more the better. However, you also have to consider price. The thing with laptops is that they are difficult to upgrade so get what you want. I mean you can do some upgrades but not much. Usually just the hard drive and add a bit more ram. Thats about it. Ofcourse, if you are going to save a lot of files you will need plenty of hard disk space. Minumum 80GB. A bigger screen also helps. So if you can go with the 17" even better. Then you need a cd or dvd burner. Finally a decent graphics card. This one is tricky. If you want to play games then you need top of the line. Other wise you usually don't. So, if no game is needed then the minimum should be 64MB and that is pretty low for todays standards.

One thing that people forget when buying a computer is the bundle software. Some computer come with good packages others don't. So thats another point of proce comparison. Also, compare which software it comes with because although there are alternatives to microsoft office they are just not as good.

Since you want to do graphics then think about getting an apple computer. they are more geared towards this end. that doesn't mean that a PC can't do it. But, generally speaking artist prefer apple.

More than 1GB of ram, probably want nearer 2GB=2000MB

Hard Drive: Probably 100GB upwards if your doing photos and/or music. if doing video, maybe even more

Get a dual core processor and probably at least 1.7 or 1.8GHz so the computer can deal with what you are asking.

I would suggest an HP laptop, I've had mine for a little under 6 months and never had a problem with it. Also HP seem do be one of he best, if not the best for multimedia applications.
Sony seem to be having issues at the moment with theirs and they are expensive.
Dell can be expensive and have a rep for going wrong every so often. If you're on a Budget you might consider Toshiba, or even Acer. Either way go with a very well known make and get a warranty with it because if its going to go wrong it probably will in the first few months.

Only my opinion, take it or leave it. Good luck shopping
