boards. Now that we have computers shouldn't we use them instead?

Wow is all I have to say. Wow.

I really don't think that showing a power point will make kids learn any more then seeing it worked out on a black board. Actually using a black board works better for most teaching functions then a computer.

I know at my college we have at least one computer at the front of every room and a few overheads. The teachers may have one screen going with a power point to put out basic information for the lecture, but anything that actually needs to be taught they use a black board equivalent. Like an overhead or one of those cameras that sends what they are writing to a projector.

Seeing the same thing on a computer screen will not magically make kids get things. Why not actually think and look at the real problems instead of saying maybe we should spend more money on neat gadgets that don't improve the learning quality.

Also if you go to any school in a good neighbor hood the kids are getting a good education. The reason is not because of funding or computers. It is because the parents take an interest so the kids don't act up and pay attention. When the teachers can teach instead of just trying to keep control that is what does it.

I would say getting parents to care about there kids is the only way to fix our education system. Though i really don't care because i will take an interest in my kids and my parents took one in me and if other families want there kids to be dumb who am I to stop them?

Think about it...and the answer is no.

A blackboard is cheap, the chalk and erasers are inexpensive.

30 *useable* computers at $1000 each in 25 classrooms. That's $750,000, and then you have to add the cost of the servers, at about $5-10,000 each per school, plus the additional wiring, add likely $5,000 (minimum) for that. Add another $20-30k for software licenses. Add the need to completely replace at least 2-3 machines per class each year, lost to outright vandalism or to simple accidental damage.

A blackboard is about $1,000 per classroom or so.

For the forseeable future, unless the Gates wants to begger himself to put that many computers in, what, well over a million(?!) schools in Canada and the US, you'll likely see no more than 1-2 computers per class and 20 or so in a computer lab.

I am in Florida.

Even some of the best public schools don't have enough computers to do what you are suggesting.

I would agree that anything that leveraged communication between the students and the teachers ; and leveraged the students access to information is a good thing.

But as always, we spend the least on what we love the most.

You must come for a rich school system where all the classrooms have computers and the teachers have been trained to use them.
