With no real offense, Have you viewed the film? Certainly if you have you've already formed your own opinions, or should have? I guess my Q is "Why do you ask?"

Ralph was a self-involved young man on a mission of his own devising, out to accomplish his goal for all the wrong reasons. As a result, he ended up self-destructing. That was the Ralph Garcey of the 1979 film.
The Ralph Garcy of the wwaaayy more recent stage version is a very different animal, bearing only perfunctory similarities. If you are planning to perform this role onstage, I would suggest that you not concern yourself the movie, and concentrate on how the character is treated within the text of the play.
