I've been riding for 5 years and for some reason, this is the first time I've heard of detuning a board. Friends just got me a new Burton Cruzer. Does it need to be detuned, and if so, where's the best place to get it done? Sport Chalet ok?

All that detuning does is dull up a new edge some after you have your bases done. But the shop that does the tune will usually do that on their own. New boards come factory tuned and dont need any attention. Best ting you can do is not to listen to who ever it is that told you to "detune" and just ride that board!!!! The snow will do all the detuning you need!!

Detuning is fairly important. You don't dull the entire edge, just the initial point of contact. If your boards edges are sharp tip to tail your board can feel "nervous" and edge catchy. It doesn't take much, just run a soap stone or a wet stone over the first inch or two of edge contact at the nose and tail of your board (depending on your preference, you can detune further back but not more than 4 inches or so). Don't go crazy, just take the bite out of the edge...don't grind it down to dull or anything. Most full service shops can hook you up.
