I'd like to recommend R.K.Narayan, he wrote a lot of novels published in paperbacks as well as the two hardcover ones in the Everyman's Library by Alfred A. Knopf. Especially "Swami and Friends" is a must since it's funny and reflects the life of rural India (in the name of Moguldi) via the adventure of a boy and his friends. It's a pity he passed away in 2001; Graham Greene highly recommended his literary works by praising him as a second to none author whose revelation to Indian culture has been appreciated.

i think if you're looking for funny stories you should definitely try R.K.Narayan...besides malgudi days, his most famous composition,a relatively recent book of his is "salt and sawdust" a witty collection of stories and opinions...
if comedy is not only what you're looking for...i would recommend Ruskin Bond with his unforgettable Rusty stories about a young boy in Dehradun..it's got drama and comedy both!
otherwise,if you want light, funny reading you can try the new author Chetan Bhagat...his books are "5.someone" and "one night at the call centre"
