Or is it blue democrat and red republican. I feel like I should know this and I am pretty savvy politically but either I can't remember or never knew. I'll bet it's something simple. But it does seem kind of ironic since red used to connote "communist" while "true blue" signified "red-blooded American".

Red represents anger, aggression, fear, and other negative emotions.These are representative of Republicans.
Blue represents peace, love, harmony, and other positive qualities. These are representative of Democrats.
