1) Act unilaterally, not taking into account the will of Congress or SCOTUS.
2) Expand presidential powers to a degree unknown in US history
3) Be the most divisive leader in history, causing a fundamental rift between members of his party and the opposition
4) Act in an almost imperial manner, causing his detractors to label him a wannabe king
5) Abandon diplomacy, threatening to attack other nations, causing others to hate the US and its leadership
6) Inspire widespread talk of impeachment among congressional oppostion
7) Publicly express disdain for the Supreme Court
8) Find his administration racked with scandals
9) Keep confidence in extremely unpopular cabinet members
10) Cause economic hardships via his monetary policies
Who would stand for a president doing these things?
Oh, did I happen to mention I was referring to Andrew Jackson, now recognized as one of the greatest presidents in United States history?

EDIT: Debra, please cite a source in which Jackson is NOT recognized as one of our greatest and most seminal presidents. I've never heard anyone question that point until you.

EDIT: eatmore, you and I DO have a voice in matters of foreign policy...on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November every four years. After that, the President is Commander-in-Chief of US forces and the formulator of foreign policy. Good presidents don't lead based on poll numbers, but rather by formulationg and following their own policies. I don't care if the President were the ONLY person in the country to support the war. He's the only one who counts until Jan. 20, 2009.

EDIT: Bigslick, have you ever taken a course in US history? Jackson was one of the most important presidents we've ever had. That's not my opinion, but that of almost every historian who has ever written on the Presidency. Read a book sometime. You might be surprised what you learn.

Amazing.
It shows us that we really don't like war -
and shows us that somehow our enemies do -
and that shows us that we always have enemies and must have courage.
Thanks for showing us courage.
GOD bless America, one and all, always!

Just because Jackson was working towards the greater freedom and betterment doesn't mean he was in the right to go about it the way he did, and it does not excuse Bush's outright contempt for the Constitution and the will of the People. He has said he will ignore the vast amount of calls for the war in Iraq to be ended soon, and push forward in the same failing manner as before.

HAHAHA. I was thinking "Andrew Jackson" the whole time.
As for being "recognized as one of the greatest Presidents," by who exactly?
Neoconservative republicans? Fundamentalists? Cheerokee Indians?
Some people think Hitler is one of history's greatest men...does that make him so?

The British troops at New Orleans were the elite shock troops that crushed Napoleon, in less than 30 seconds Jackson killed thousands of them including most of their top offciers with not one American death. Pakenham the commander lay dead, brother in law to the duke of wellington.

Andrew Jackson was also a slave trader and an alcoholic. I hardly think George W. Bush will ever be considered a great president.

When I saw #7 I knew you weren't talking about George Bush. G.W.B. is far more likely to thank his lucky stars for the Supreme Court than to publicly disdain it.

the difference is that Jackson was successful, America has lost in Iraq and possibly in Afghanistan.
History will judge him on what he said, he invaded Iraq to look for WMD on behalf of the UN who did not authorise him to do so. History will judge him harshly. America hates failures and the USA has lost the war in Iraq.,

...it's so true that it makes me sick to my stomach. I'm only eighteen, but I have sought to educate myself in the dealings of politics, political theory, and the most enlightening subject, philosophy, which has led me to look at all of Bush's Bushit in a new light, which is more like a black light that has been shattered on the American floor.
