The Grim Reaper is I guess a personification of death, although throughout history most cultures have had a being that comes to collect the souls of the departed. It seems more likely actually that the reaper is just another of the pagan 'gods' that were amalgamated into Christianity in order to make the social transition smoother. Afterall Christmas and Easter are unlikely to have occurred at the times of the year we celebrate them, however those times were occasions of Pagan celebrations.
