I think that they are both. They are a commercialized Rip off due to the fact that they bring in more money than anyone would ever see in a life time. And for those who have no body and no money it can be seen that way.
It's a romantic opportunity for those that due have somebody and money. To bad that most people have to have a day set a side to say that they love each other or do anything nice for each other. But that's the good old USA for you. Always looking for the next dollar to be made or making one day out of the year to say how they feel.

A commercialised rip off giving men a chance to be romantic, or look like a fool trying. I hope I do good this year. I have motivation.

St Valentines Day was originally a Roman Catholic feast day in honor of two early Catholic priests, Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Trevi, who were executed for their faith by the Romans.
In pagan England and France, there had long been a fertility festival in mid February - the Catholics took that day and made it St Valentines day. That's why the holiday is associated with love and romance in Western countries.
The British developed the tradition of lovers exchanging love notes on Valentines Day - the precursor of the modern American Valentines tradition.
In early 20th century America, florists, chocolate manufacturers and drug store owners took advantage of this tradition. Soon a whole new industry developed - the preprinted Greeting Card industry - and the newly emerging advertising industry also pushed the holiday.
Today, Valentines Day is a very commercial holiday - it's the biggest day of the year for greeting card companies, and it's a major day for florists, cut flower growers, diamond companies, jewelry stores, chocolate manufacturers, candy stores, drug stores, lingere manufacturers, lingere retailers and general merchandize stores.
Basically, it's become a commercial holiday - a lot like Christmas.
Worse yet, every year, millions of American women get in needless fights with their men because they didn't buy them a "romantic" enough gift!!!
And somewhere, both St Valentines are slowly weeping!!!

Well it's not a rip-off to me because my bf and I don't participate. We prefer to be romantic and give gifts etc. when it's not expected of us, that way you know the other person has been thinking of you and spontaneously decided to do something nice for you, instead of thinking "$#it, it's Valentines, guess I'd better get some chocolates or something..."

Mostly commercial rip off but it gives the usually unromantic person the excuse to be romantic, if only for just one day!

Rip off! Why should there be a day dedicated to loving someone? Shouldn't you love a person everyday?

Hallmark's play on the naivety of American youths.
Even though it has its foundings, it's lost whatever real value it had and become a chance for retailers to collect money hand over fist.
