Here is the short answer
Big Bang Theory, currently accepted explanation of the beginning of the universe. The big bang theory proposes that the universe was once extremely compact, dense, and hot. Some original event, a cosmic explosion called the big bang, occurred about 13.7 billion years ago, and the universe has since been expanding and cooling.

The COMMON MISCONCEPTION is that the Big Bang theory explains how the universe came to be; but it is not. As my favorite physicist explains:
"Some people think that the big bang is an explanation of how the universe began, its not. The big bang is a theory of how the universe evolved from a split second after whatever brought it into existence." - Physicist Brian Greene.
The Big Bang theory explains that the universe was once very small and compact, almost smaller than a baseball; you, me, the earth, stars, and everything. Then space rapidly expanded and everything began to move away from each other and soon starts, planets, and other things were created in time. And that is the Big Bang in a nutshell.

The big bang theory is the theory that the universe was one tiny dot of infinite density. It then exploded and is expanding at a physics defying speed, faster than the speed of light, and kept on expanding at that rate and cooled and becoming less and less dense.
There is a big crunch theory that the universe does not expand forever and reaches a critical density and starts to shrink at the same rate. What happens is that everything, is crunched to a space approximately 87 times smaller than the hole that you can stick your finger through in the center of a compact disc. After the big crunch, there is another big bang, and in this case, we could be one of a string of universes.

The big bang theory is an idea that at the begining of time the universe was contained in a space no bigger that a pin-head. that means ALL the matter and energy in the universe. Eventually this became unstable and exploded releasing everything in a big bang. It tends to explain why the cosmos is expanding away from one central point.

The theory is that ALL matter and energy is the result of a massive explosion of a point, called a singularity. Of course the concept of a big bang is merely a metaphor that we can understand, because under these conditions sound (and nearly everthing, did not exist in the forms that we are familiar with.
There are several hypothesis that have different suggestions for the beginning of our known universe
