My theory is that he actually wants Congress to pull funding. Then he cannot send troops over to Iraq and not look like he wants to lose or is going to lose the war. That way he thinks he will look better. What do you think?

Hmm, are you in politics? You are certainly crafty enough.

That is an insanely cynical point of view.

Imagine you are the President. You are literally the most important person in the world because your decisions affect millions of people, all around the globe.

People change once they reach the White House. They realize the solemn duty they have to the nation and its people. Bush understands this war is far more important than most people realize. If Iraq becomes a stable democracy, stinking dictatorships and nutcase religious regimes in the whole area will be under intense pressure to democratize. It's like when the people of Eastern Europe saw how the West lives. They became furious and demanded more freedom.

Bush sincerely wants Iraq to succeed. This will be his mark in history.

BUT, If the troop reinforcement works, then the democrats will look even more like the defeatist party. They would then loose in 08 because the people wouldn't forget how the democrats wanted us to run away in Iraq. Maybe its a risky way that Bush is trying to redeam himself after turning his back on the Republicans for his AMNESTY speeches.

No, I think he really wants to make a last-ditch attempt at salvaging that situation. The whole thing was almost pointless if all we did was get rid of Sadaam. There are baddies worse than him in the world--if we don't get stability in the region and make the place less freindly to terrorists, we accomplished much less than we planned to going in.

Sounds about as plausible as anything else I have heard suggested. Anything to make it look like the opposition to the war is no more than a personal attack on him rather than an objection to the situation itself. As long as he can do that...

Well then the Dems would be blamed and then they would tell their friends in the territory to beef up the fight and make it impossible to elect a Dem come time for the Presidency. Smooth kid good thought? atta boy, you go man.
