I would say it was set in the 90's since this was when Forrest was sitting on the park bench, when he married the girl, and his mother & wife died. The rest was flashbacks from his life from the 50's through the 80's.

the movie is pretty mucha reflection of his whole life, i assume from the 50's to whenever the movie was filmed, '94 i think.
