They're very important for the best colleges. Even if you scored perfectly on the SAT and had an unweighted 4.0 GPA, schools like Harvard and Stanford wouldn't even consider you.
Your local state school would take you, but at a place like UC Berkeley, you'd better have that near perfect GPA and SAT if you don't have any extra currics.
I really fail to see how you don't have time to do anything if you're just a sophomore. What do you do after school? If you work to help support your family, that's actually an extra curricular activity that's looked highly upon by schools b/c they know kids from poorer families have a harder time getting out to do a sport or typical extra currics. But, having to go home just to do homework is not an excuse they'll take.

The extra curricular are very important, because they show that you're well rounded. Some schools even frown on folks with the great GPA with no extracurricular activities. The logic is that a good student has mastered the system of taking tests and getting grades, but the well rounded person has the skills to succeed in life... colleges want to have alumni that are successful! On top of that if you are involved in extra curriculars you may have to work hard, but you will have activities that make you happy. There is no sense in depriving yourself of fun activities just for a college. Oh, and don't be afraid to risk the AP classes... taking "cake" classes actually does look bad, and most colleges will respect the fact that you have challenged yourself.

Extracurricular activities are VERY important. You can have the highest scores out of anyone in the world but they like seeing whether your involved in school or not. I'm also in 10th grade and i joined my first club this year, student council. If you join some club with a friend it makes it a lot easier on you, because I also tend to be shy. I'm not sure but maybe a class like yearbook or something could be extracurricular. Good Luck!
