Ok, I used my PC before I went to work today and it was 100% fine. I shut it down and left. When I got home, I tried turning the computer on and nothing happened. The power doesn't even go on. How could something like this happen while I'm at work, if it wasn't even on, and it perfectly ok before?!! I have an emachines T2885, running Windows XP home edition and it's only 2-3 years old. It shouldn't be dead already! I called Best Buy and they said it might be the motherboard, but they charge $80 to look at it and I don't have that to spare right now just for them to LOOK at it. So is there anything I can do myself, without having to bring it to them? Can the cause of this possibly be something other than my motherboard? How do i find out? And if it IS the motherboard, how much can I expect to pay? Best Buy said $200-300, but for that much I would just buy a new PC....Please help, I have a lot of important things on there that I need!!

Serious ansers please!! If you must know, I'm using an old PC I keep for situations exactly like this, and of course I made sure it was plugged in, I'm not an idiot!

To clarify, there is no fan, no noise, no splash or startup screen...nothing. Nothing happens when I push power. I opened up the computer and when I plug the cord in I see a green light come on, so I know the cord works, but I'm not sure what to do. Several people have suggested it might be the power supply. Is that the piece with the fan? How do I know for sure if that's the problem?

From what I've read, and what's already been posted...this is my assessment.
1. If you have NO power at all, no lights come on or the fan doesn't come on then it is the power supply that has died on you.
2. If you do have lights and the fan comes on, drives post etc, but won't boot up or post to bios, then it's the Motherboard (just happened to me not to long ago)
Try opening your case and see if the power supply has a Test Button on it...if so push it and see if it comes on...If so, then it could just be the outer switch that's gone bad...
See where I'm going with this...Do common sense trouble shooting...
One more thing...Look in your phone book in your town (city) and see if there is a PC store that will do a diagnostic of your PC for free...even in the little town I'm in (14,000) we had one here so I found out exactly what needed to be replaced because they tested everything to see if it was good or not...Everything was good but the Motherboard....Because it wouldn't post to Bios.

Is there any fan sound when u start the machine up? if no then suggests no power - replace PSU

Any beeps? - check out if they are as to what theymean, use google, type in bios beeps

Does the mahine start at all and if so is there anything on screen? Does it show the splash screen? can you get into windows?

If theres no fan noise and no power, check the power cord and the plug.

If theres fan noise but nothing happens when u turn it on, i suggest taking the Hard Drive out of the pc and trying it on the old pc u have, if the machine boots its more likely to be the Motherboard.

But from what you have put down it suggests a power fault more then anything else.

Add any other info if you can think of any. try answering my questions

Unplug the power cord from the tower. Take the case off of your tower. Take the memory card out of the slot, hold the power button on your computer in for 30 seconds, then reinsert the memory card. This should work. Make sure your card clicks back in on both sides so you know it's in right. If that doesn't work, I would suggest replacing the memory card before you buy a mother board or a new pc. Also, if you are using an ethrenet cable, unplug that before you go messing with the memory card. And don't plug it back in until after your computer has passed the Welcome screen on start up. Good luck.

Yes the power supply is the actual part where the plug goes into the back of your computer it is a square and a fan is attatched to it. If you need really cheap help you can try this guy. I have used him on several occasions.

I highly doubt it is the motherboard. If it is the motherboard for some crazy reason check ebay for prices DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AT BEST BUY....they rip you off so bad. They tried to charge me crazy money to put in a stick of memory....which I can do...I was just purchasing the stick and they are like come on come on we can do it lol...for 125 dollars or something crazy like that.

I'm sure you've double checked the connections right?? If you have a pet cat or dog its possibly they knocked a cord loose or something.

Otherwise, if you push the button and you gut NOTHING, no fans no lights no anything, I would look into replacing the power supply. Those can go out pretty easily and pretty frequently if its a cheap one. And they will die sudden deaths too...

Get yourself a quality power supply...and don't worry they are pretty easy to replace. Just keep track of what went where when disconnecting old one.

Relax. There is no reason to suspect your data is in danger. In a worse-case you can pull out the drive and install it in another PC as as a second drive. I think part of your power supply may have burned out. They're easily replaceable with just a screwdriver.

At this situation, your problem probably on the power switch on the casing...('coz the motherboard got powered, so it's not motherboard or PSU problem)
