The Goose with the Golden Egg by Aesop I've always liked this one a lot, it shows that if you let greed consume you it can lead you to nothing, that if you cut off the hand that feeds you, you'll starve.

I still like the one about the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady wins the race. Of course it's Aesop.

this one is european- it's called henny penny.
Henny penny wanted to bake a cake- so she called turkey lurkey and ducky lucky and asked them to help her plant the wheat. ducky lucky and turkey lurky said no, they were busy. Then to harvest, then to grind flour and then to gather eggs , milk the cow and then to help bake the cake. Each time the answer was no they were busy- so henny penny did the planting, harvesting etc. by herself finally the cake was baked and henny penny sat down to eat the cake. Turkey lurky and ducky lucky came by asking for a piece and the reply was no, you did not help me plant the wheat, etc and ending with- you will not help me eat my cake...in politically correct fairytales- a rewriting of it is provided. I can't remember the author- but it's fun.
