i want to go to school of the arts here in north carolina for my junior and senior year in high school, but i dont know if i want to pursue an arts career. If i do go, would it narrow my chances of getting into Duke university for example? should i just focus on math and science if i want to be a doctor? should i just apply and see what happens?

Going to a magnate school is usually a plus -- especially in a place like NC (which for some reason ranks very high in post-secondary education but fairly low in secondary education).

On the other hand, if you are interested in medicine in the long run -- you have to take lots of math and science in high school. I suspect that you can take those courses at the school of the arts.

Why not send an Email to the admissions office at Duke. Tell them about your situation and ask for their advice. You can also talk with the guidance councilors at the high school and ask them what colleges their graduates get into.

My time as a student at Duke was one of the best times of my life. I wish you luck.

I specialized in arts and then later made a complete turn around. None of my prior training "hurt" my later studies or career. The only caveat I would add is thid: ALWAYS learn top notch study skills for ANY subject. So that for example you can write a brilliant essay answer under pressure regardless of whether the topic is history, art, math, anything! My test taking skills went temporarily a bit flabby for about the last two years of painting school. Read, write, be proficient!
