I think all 3 answers above are true to some extent. But if you are asking about younger Asian women, my guess is that they received them as gifts from family, and wear because there are pretty. And the reason why they are given as gifts is because of the belief that jade protects, that when you are in a dangerous situation, the jade (worn on your body) will break before your body is injured. My sister believes this is true: She once almost stumbled down a hill, and as she regained her balance, her jade suddenly broke off (without hitting anything) and shattered on the ground. Superstition, coincidence, or self-fulfilling belief???

In Asian culture, jade is a symbol of good fortune. A fair amount of Asian are rather superstitious, and even some that are not will sometimes wear a good luck charm "because it can't hurt".

Maybe because people steal them. Or maybe they know the true value of a person don't lie in the ring on a finger. Maybe they save gold for all the electronics they have. Or maybe their is still a suppression of asian women, or maybe they think a ring means ownership. Did anyone think that it just might be women in your area? Try asking someone, direct communication should work well.
