My grandmother was mad when I said that David Beckham was sexy. And she had said that "you should lust after them(meaning white men) after what they have did to our women" Shes had some bad experiences with white men. And so did her mom. And she keep telling me that they only like Black and hispanic women for sex.

I hate to say it, but mostl likely this will never change (at best she will slightly lighten up on the intensity aimed in your direction). While she is wrong in saying/believeing such things, we need to keep in mind that our grandparents grew up in a much different era, where racial hatred was very common, extremely brutal and often bloody. Those scars can be very hard to heal. I would try to calmly and openly discuss with her why she feels this way and tell her about how your world is today, in a friendly manner, maybe while you two are spending quaility time together one afternoon baking or somthing. Just remember to approach her gently on this, as there may be more and worse experiences in the past than you are aware of. You may at one point want to bring a white friend over to visit and meet her so that she can see a bit how the world has changed since her day - its hard to hate someone who is standing in friendship in your home.

You might want to do some research on what it was like in her era in the area that she lived in so that you can understand more deeply what she may say to you, and your knowledge will show her that you aren't just a naive little girl.

Good luck!

P.S. - yeah, Beckham is sexy :) hehehe

Your grandmother will more than likely not stop saying these things, this is how she was raised. She was taught that black women should not feel anything towards a white man unless it's dislike. This was program into her from childhood. All you can do is keep living your life for yourself and do not judge people the way your grandmother does.

No, she will not stop saying this stuff...Girl, it is up to you to like whom ever you want. As far as lusting after any attractive man, that doesn't mean you are gonna jump up and have sex with him...just don't go out of your way to push this in your grandma's face. Besides, you sound young and hon, you are only young once. Grandma sounds like she has been thru some really major stuff that has hurt her pretty badly...and your mom too. Don't try to argue with them, but respect their opinions and listen...if someone forgets the past, they will repeat it. Try to learn, but don't forget everyone is not the same. Sorry if I rambled on, but take care.

That's not true. My cousin loves the way black women look yes, but physical attraction is part of everyone. He is just not physically attracted to white women. Just like I am attracted to tan skin--I love latinos, native americans, etc. If she had bad experiences though, she has the right to be wary about white guys. I would just keep thinking white guys were cute and just not say anything about them in front of her out of respect.

No, she will not stop saying these things. THe best you can do is say 'Gradma!' in an exasperated voice when she does.

But David Bekham is still sexy (despite the nail polish and sarongs).

You drool over whoever catches your eye, black, white, latin, or green. I give you permission ;P

she's just old school- let it go & turn your filter on when you are around her. My grandmother was a southern baptist racist from the word go & i just had to ignore it. There are a lot of things though that you are going to want to take in from her... she's been around long enough that even though lifestyles have changed, her traditions are still very important.

Your Grandmother is a racist. Not old fashion, but a horrible racist.
