She's been around since colonial times in Mexico. La Llorona, the weeping or wailing woman, is a morality tale about consequences and is probably based on real characters whose names have been lost in the retelling. The story was handing down by word-of-mouth in oral story telling tradition. The particulars have been forgotten. But it involves an uncommonly beautiful woman of low birth involved with a high born man of low degrees. Basically he decides to leave La Llorona after she has several children by him. He intends to take 'his' children with him to his 'new wife.' In sorrow and desperation La Llorona drowns her own children to exact revenge against the father who has betrayed her. For this La Llorona is sentenced by the Powers That Be to forever lament the death of her children near the site of their demise.
Parents have been warning children away from danger spots (rivers, old well, and other water ways) for centuries. Stay away from there or 'La Llorona' will get you!

I grew up with this story! I heard it once that "a friend of a friend" saw her. Apparently this person lived right next to a riverbed, she had a new baby and the baby had just fallen asleep. She put the baby in the crib and went downstairs and was visiting with a neighbor in her yard. Suddenly they heard the baby start to cry and they ran inside to see a crying woman in white carrying the baby towards the door. They screamed and the woman put the baby down and disappeared.
I guess this story is to keep young mothers from leaving their baby unattended, because La Llorona may come to take the baby to replace the ones she drowned...or something like that!
Latino urban legend at it's best!

Ghost story from the Colonial Era in Mexico. I don't know of anyone who has seen her, at least in the cities, in rural areas it is more likely that someone will tell you they have.

She seems to have stuck around for quite a long time. I haven't seen her myself, but know stories. Nor have I seen a phot or heard any EVP. Mostly horror stories.
