Ask a Marine - he could tell you. Belleau Wood, the Argonne Forest, Chateau Thierry are probably the most famous. When you read about the tragedies that befell these men, your heart goes out to them.

There were many, but the Battle of Bellau Wood is probably the most famous. It was the first time U.S. Marines faced German troops, and it wasn't pretty. It was a meat-grinder, even by the standards of the time, and believe me, that's saying something. Nevertheless, the Marines held the line and drove the Germans back. After the battle, the defeated German commander referred to the Americans he'd faced as "teuffel hunden", and Marines have been called "Devil Dogs" ever since!
