I don't work for this company anymore, so they locked me out of their HR website. I can't even get to my last pay stub, they're a paperless company. I called and gave them my new address but I'm afraid that I may have done it too late. I know that if my neighbors are tampering with my mail it's a federal offense. You have to prove that it's happening first. But that doesn'thelp me with the tax stuff though. Is there a law that states that employers must keep a copy of employees W-2's? The IRS frightens me a little. That's why I'm a bit stressed out.

I'm doing my taxes myself. I can't afford to have someone prepare them for me. Is there a way for me to get a W-2 from my last pay-stub?

By law employers have until January 31st to get your W-2 in the mail to you. If you have filed a change of address with the postal service, then you should still receive it even if you have moved. IF NOT, you can always call your former employers and ask them to forward your W-2 to you or have them fax a copy of it to you. If you plan on filing electronically, a copy should work just fine. Otherwise, last resort, you have to wait until Feb 15th, if by then you do not receive a W-2, you can use your final paystub from your employer and your preparer can create a substitute Form W-2. I did taxes for a few years and those are the issues.

Your W-2 for 2006 has to be filed for tax year 2006. You have three years to file this after April 15th of the year it was supposed to be filed. You cannot file two years together on the same tax return. You have until April 17th this year (because the 15th is on a Saturday) to file your taxes. Wait until the 1st of February or even now, and call the company issuing your W-2 and give them your new address. OR just wait for your W-2 in the mail. If you file without this W-2, you will likely get a letter from the IRS stating you owe them money for not filing with it.

No, you can't do that. The deadline for MAILING them isn't for another week.

If you're concerned about the mail, contact your employer and see if you can pick it up, or else at least give them your new address. With some employers, you can print your W-2 off the Internet - not all do this, but you could call them and ask.

If you file without all the W-2's for the year, it could end up holding up your refund because things wouldn't match. That is not sure to happen - you might get by with it.

If you file without one of the W-2's information, then you'd have to file an amended return later after you got it. That isn't the best idea, but might work. You can't just file this year's info with next year's return.

No you can't. Try to get your W2 directly from the company that you work for. They may even be able to fax it to you. It should not matter if they have already mailed them out, the corporate office should keep all W2s on file.

EDIT:
Mexlover (below) is correct, but failed to address the question. If you file seperately, you can file later. If you are filing jointly you will need to report all income (meaning that you need your W2 also).

You can get a copy of your w-2 from your employer...you need to do that...

If your neighbors are tampering with the mail, that's a federal offense.

SOME PEOPLE START THE PROCESS WITH THE LAST CHECK STUB BUT IT DEPENDS WHERE YOU GO
