The era of segregation in the south. The "Jim Crow" laws were designed to keep blacks ignorant and powerless. The name comes from that of a black clown common to minstrel shows in the 19th century.

Jim Crow was a set of laws that segregated blacks and other minorities from white society. It was most common in the South. I'm not sure on the dates but I would guess from the end of the Civil War to the 1960's.

The Jim Crow Laws were laws that discrimminated against African-Americans. They ranged from forbidding slaves to read to requiring segregated facilities for whites and blacks. They were finally overturned by the US Supreme Court case Brown vs.The Board of Education of Topeka.
