I'm wondering if you're talking about the people that love to look up to the hollywood stars and rich people like Trump and Bill Gates. Yes, I believe there are people like that, and also look down on the poor, because they don't think those people are even trying.

I don't understand everything... I do wish I knew how and why people become criminals. I do know it's not right though. But I'm wondering how hard a person has to try who doesn't get any breaks. I've been lucky, so far.

But on the same token, I'd still rather work hard for a living at a fast food restaurant, than steal to get by.

Poor is more of a state of mind. I think bad of those who will not help themselves. In America there is no excuse.

And for the previos poster, most millionaires are actually first generation....read "The Millionaire Next Door" for an accurate, statistical view of America's "rich"

Due to the fact that society has to support the poor....that would be a reason to think bad of them. And we should have some respect for the rich....the top 10% of wealthy individuals pay 70% of our nations taxes....

I've been on both sides of this fence and think it's like most of the answers so far, that the rich are regarded as ambitious and able to take care of themselves and the poor are regarded as lazy and unmotivated. The whole thing is warped as far as I'm concerned. Respect should be garnered by how you treat your fellow man. I don't respect anyone just because of financial wealth, spiritual wealth and what you do with that is the true measure of a man. Something else to keep in mind when passing judgment on the poor is that a huge percentage of them are seriously mentally ill, and who's to judge them but God?

We, as Amerkans, have been quite brainwashed into thinking Capitalism is a good thing. We 'Merkans also think that god rewards people by making them rich and punish them by making them poor...

All superstition and the result of a brainwashed society...brainwashed by television commercials, movies, educational system, church...we're so deep in it, and so used to being deep in it, we don't even realize we're in it up to our eye balls. Messed up.

Myself, I'm the opposite. I respect the poor and frugal and disrespect the dishonest rich who waste money on garbage.

A previous poster says that society supports the poor...UNTRUE...society is supporting the rich! We spend more tax dollars on corporate welfare than we do on all the single, teen mothers in the world put together. We've spent more money on Enron and other Savings and Loan scandals than we ever spend on food stamps, homeless or other "national disasters".

Some people think poor people are lazy and didn't try hard enough. Rich people are seen as successful since they 'must' be smarter since they have more money. Also, rich people look good because they can afford the nicest clothes, makeup and plastic surgery. We like beautiful people and it's easier to look good when you have money.

Speak for yourself... I have a profound distrust for the rich- most of them either inherited their money or lied and cheated lots of people to make their fortune. There is nothing wrong with being poor.

cause that is the bottom line in a fundamentalist judeo-christian capitalist society we have. doesn't matter how you get but if you don't have it you get no respect. you are just a dog and dumb animal that gets kicked around. would take a revolution to change that condition. better to pack it up and find another society like i plan to do. i love the web. i am able to check on laws, rent rates etc. in many countries. i think i want to live in southern england. that is where my ancestors came from long ago. they made a mistake, i think.

I think the perception is that if you're poor you are lazy, stupid and/or uneducated and if you're rich you are hard-working, smart and/or educated.
