Im a sophomore in high school, and im stressin about grades. Up to 7th grade i was an all A student, and then in 8th i became A/B, in freshman year i was like 3.0 avg gpa and now im in sophomore year second quarter with like a 3.4 gpa. im really stressing out about college... for the past 3 years it seems like ive dozed out or somethin, and i really wanna turn my grades around and get A's. I know im capable of it. my goal is to go to a medical school and get my phd in either dentistry or orthopedic surgery. My question is, have i dug a hole too deep to get out of, or is medical school still a possibility for me? im really stressing out about it, and i feel like because of these past 2 years i wont even be able to get into a college. please, i need suggestions and honest, critical answers. thanks.

It is never too late to do anything. It looks like you already have your life and career planned out. What I suggest is to broaden your choices. Have back up plans. And even if you don't manage to get into medical school, you can always change later on. Try and choose something that will allow you to branch to what you want to study, I have known many people who come back to take another course. Aiming for a PhD is quite high, and you still have a lot of time to decide. Your grades aren't that bad, you still have two more years, talk to your guidance counselor and they will be able to put you on the right path.
Hope this helps, good luck

Just study harder, and try to focus more in class. If you don't understand something, go to your teacher for help, or get a tutor. Most schools have after school help programs, and they dont cost anything but a few extra hours after school. Don't worry about the past, otherwise you're going to be stressed more than you need to be. Schools only look at your high school, so dont worry about 8th grade, and if you do well on your SAT and ACT, along with a good gpa, you should be fine. In fact, my school has a class to help prepare for the SAT and ACT, and it also has medical academy, so you can check with your guidance cousiler to see if your school has these options. The SAT and ACT classes, you might have to wait another year, and you do have to pay for the books. You could even buy a book and study in your free time for the tests. Just stop by Barnes and Noble, and pick up a copy of an SAT or ACT guide.

First, take a deep breath. You will absolutely be able to get into a decent college. It will help if you get your grades up a bit, but you're not in as bad shape as you think.

Hopefully you're taking a rigorous course load, with honors and (next year) AP classes. Get extra help from the teachers if you need it.

Work on practicing/preparing for the PSAT and SAT, as well (junior year.) If you can afford it, get a tutor or take a prep class. If you must, buy the study books/CDs and work it out on your own.

Make sure you're logging in extracurriculars and community service. Develop closer relationships with select teachers who can then write letters of recommendation for you.

It's wonderful that you have such an ambitious goal. Don't freak out...use your energy to make a plan, and go for it. Don't let these goals overwhelm the opportunity to have fun, to enjoy your teenage years. This is a wonderful time in your life and it shouldn't all be about school and college and learning.

Best of luck to you.
