I was "spanked" as a child, it didn't scare me or permanently damage me. It was also well deserved. My parents didn't abuse me they corrected me and it taught me respect. That is what is wrong with a lot of kids today, they go to schools and the teachers take all kinds of abuse from kids that say I will call SS if you say anything to me. I say spare the rod. Give the idiots that think a spanking deserves a year in prison. I am not condoning abuse, there is a difference.

Not enough info, lol. If the spanking was just the tip of the iceberg, then he most certainly would be. But that's not the point. If it's a law, it has to be enforced or otherwise it will never be followed. If California has decided that spanking is illegal, that means it is past the moral debate and must now be lawfully enforced.
Basically, what I am trying to say if your question, while still suitable for discussion, would probably have a greater impact if spanking was still being debated.
(By the way, is spanking illegal in Cali? I have no idea if it is, personally).

I don't like to see kids getting hurt in any way, some spankings are more like a betting. things like that we need to stop even if it puts the child in to a one parent home or foster care.
I'm not saying I don't believe in spanking, I just don't believe in betting a child.
I still remember back in the Early 60's one of my moms friends hitting her baby ( he was about 2 y.o) so hard that she kill'd him.
I'm 48 now and i still think about that baby.
but witch is best now days that's a 50/50 question.
Is it the good parent that is still home?
Is it a good and loving foster care?
Though question to finish answering it.

Absolutely not. That law is a terrible one. Even though I don't really approve of spanking I don't think if you do you deserve to go to prison. If a parent spanked so excessively that it causes bruising or other damage then it's already child abuse and could be punished. This law is only going to end up punishing a innocent parents who find it appropriate to spank.

I'd take the year in jail, otherwise I know I've lost the battle for my child to teach her/him the proper behaviour that is acceptable, I'd certainly use the swat team, me and my fly swatter did wonders for my fatherless home. And I must admit I did a very good job with my children, one is a mechanic, the other is physiotherapist and the other is the best mom that I love very much. Now spank me for being a bad mom.

You cannot discipline your kids in any way now. When you say,
"It's time for your punishment" they laugh and threaten to call
the police! Who do you think the cops will believe? It doesn't
matter where you live.

It only applies to children under the age of four. I see nothing wrong with that law.
