Well I may not be a genuis, but done this a few times.

The connection goes as follows:

1) Cable connection into cable modem.
2) cable modem network cable (rj45) into WAN port on router

Once that's done, you need to follow the manual for the router to enable the Wireless connections. Many routers require you to be physically connected into the router to do this, so connect a rj45 wire from one of the router LAN ports into a lan port of the laptop or other computer.

Then, from that other computer or laptop, go the the admin panel for the router. This is often something like http://192.168.0.1/ or whatever it says in the manual. (There are several different methods, so the manual is a big help here.)

Once logged into the router, follow the manual directions for enabling the wireless connection. Get it working first without any encryption (WEP/WAP/etc.) and then come back to set that up.

Once the router is set up, you need to establish the wireless connection on the laptop. Right-click on MyNetwork connections and then click on the Wireless Network Connection. If this is an external card, follow the directions that came with it. Otherwise, follow the prompts for setting up the connection.
