Check your firewall settings. The firewall rules may have been changed to block access to the internet for IM programs.

sounds like messenger is turned off in the services. go to run type services.msc click ok in the box scroll down to messenger and see if it is stopped. if it is restart it.

happened to me once however a simple uninstall/reinstall did the trick keeping contacts in place
