Before you repaint - you need to find out why the mold is there. If there was a leak - has it been fixed?? If not, the problem will persist.

However, after you've fixed the problem - spray the ceiling with a water/bleach mixture. Be sure to let dry thoroughly, then prime and paint.

You're going to have to replace that area....nothing is going to kill it. Keep in mind that black mold emits spores into the air....that can cause sicknesses and lung problems. It can also affect animals in the house, and has caused death before in humans that have a history of lung problems, or frail weak people with immune problems. If you do remove that area....make sure you wear a mask. You can try bleach.....but it'll come right back. This is the reason why so many houses in New Orleans are condemned......cause black mold is growing all over, even between the walls. Best of luck to you.

Be sure to use primer.... it seals and stops regrowth in the same area.
