You don't use a lift under normal circumstances. You use something that is called an appliance dolly. It has a strap built into it that hold the washer on the dolly. It has a pair of wheels and also skids for stairs.
It is not impossible to move without it, but almost so. Even with the dolly, you need a couple of somewhat strong people.
Most rental stores have it. Also places like U-Haul. It is fairly common.

Yeah!---go down to the local bar and get a couple of drunks...offer them a bottle of beer for it. OR, ask a couple of sober guys at the Episcople church....offer them a used Bible that you say was found on the Titanic.
