I have 76 honda cj360 with 16000 on it.
I've just cleaned rebuild the carb.
When i put it in 1st gear, I rev it up to 3-4000 RPM when ease the clutch. VERY SLOWLY!! and it still sputter and Kills the engine.
I have to rev up like 5000-6000 RPM to to go first gear...
It happens in 2nd and 3rd gear too, if i even get there before engine kills.
I feels like it lost some power.
This happened before carb clean. and that;s why i rebuild the carb, but it did NOT help....
So let me make this clear...
It idles fine but when i put it in ANY gear, I have to REV it up really high or the RPM drops and kills the engine.
If I pull the clutch right before the engine kill, It revs up again.
but then when in gear(when riding)I pull a full trottle and it feels like it lost some power.

Thank you

Many years ago I had a Yamaha 650 that did the same thing, although I had not messed with the carb(s). What was wrong was the spark was weak because the generator was going bad. It would idle OK, but under load it would die if I did not fiddle with the throttle just right. It reminds me of a funny story, I hope you don't mind if I share it.

The bike would die at stop lights, and stop signs. I had to find just the right amount of throttle to give it, and one day I got mad at the fact that it died at a very busy intersection. I was a new rider, and did not realize what was going to happen when I did what I did.

Well, what I did was give the throttle a hearty whack. I must have been at about 5,000 or so RPM, and I let out the clutch all at once. I was quite startled to see the front of the bike rise into the air, guage cluster and tank coming up to meet my face. I did what my buddies that were riding with me said was a "neat" wheelie through the intersection before before I got back in control and pulled in the clutch and slammed on the rear brake. (Of course, the engine died again.)

Scared the hell out of me, and it was my first and last "wheelie". I took it to a shop and they found the bad generator. Rode the bike for another year with no problems before I traded it in.

I would check the battery and all your electrical system, make sure you have good spark. The smaller engines are fussy that way. You may only need new plugs, which would be a good thing. Your problem sounds alot like what was wrong with my bike.

Rifle man is correct, im a state certified tech for bikes and it sounds like your gyro is goin out. You not getting load combustion. Idle is one thing but it pulls much more current when accelerating and the gyro seems to be having trouble producing the current.

look I'm going to sound like an idiot, but are you sure the brakes aren't locked somehow Ok I see the 360 has 2 carbs are you sure both are getting fuel. Can you disconnect one side of the exhaust at the muffler and make sure both cylinders are firing. You would be amazed as to how much power from just one cylinder firing that it takes just to keep turning the motor over
