Pain causes us to appreciate life without pain. Many times we would not understand another person's pain, had we not already experienced it.

There's a religious perspective on pain, and the one I'm particularly familiar with is Catholic and perhaps more broadly Christian. That is pain is an opportunity to atone for our sins. Catholics are taught to consider our transgressions during periods of pain and pray for forgiveness.

A lesson. Whether the lesson is to not do something again, or how to cope, or how strong emotionally we are, a lesson is learned. If we pay attention to the lesson, we can learn alot about ourselves.

awareness and being precautious. other than that, it's an experience. the next time when the pain hit you again, it wont be that hurt as the first time did.
